What is respite care?
Respite care is temporary, short-term care provided to a sick, elderly, or disabled person, and is suitable for anyone who might need some extra support for a short period. This includes people recovering from illness or surgery, or individuals who would benefit from extra support during a challenging time. It allows the regular caregiver a break to rest, travel, or handle emergencies, while ensuring the person receiving care stays safe and supported.
Respite care usually falls into two main types: respite care at home or in a residential setting such as day care centres, or residential or care homes.
With home-based respite care, a trained Care Assistant visits the Client in the comfort of their own home.
Residential respite care involves a short stay in a care home or nursing facility. Choosing between the two depends on the individual’s needs and preferences.

How long does a respite care stay last?
Respite care stays can vary in length. Some stays last just a few days, while others may be a week or several weeks. If needed due to a change in needs, this may turn into long-term support to compensate for increasingly complex needs or concerns about safety and wellbeing. Is respite care suitable for people living with dementia?
Respite care can be suitable for people living with dementia. We understand that caring for a person with dementia isn’t easy, and can be stressful and tiring. Respite care can help you balance your commitments and feel less overwhelmed whilst giving the person with dementia the opportunity to socialise with others and try new things in a comfortable environment. We understand that to support the Client’s wellbeing, we also need to support yours, and that involves supporting you while you take a break from your caregiving duties.
