Diabetes FAQs
What are the first signs of being a diabetic?
If you’re awaiting a diagnosis and planning ahead for potential diabetes care, it’s important to know which symptoms to look out for.
Early symptoms of diabetes often include:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Increased urination
- Excessive thirst and a dry mouth
- Fatigue
You may also experience increased hunger, blurred vision and even a numb or tingling sensation in your feet. These symptoms can cause discomfort and distract you from your daily routine.
Speak to your healthcare professionals to confirm the type of diabetes you have before getting in touch to discuss a diabetes care plan.
Read our guide to Health Awareness, to help you spot any warning signs early.
Can you live a normal life with diabetes?
Many Clients and loved ones approach our specialist team to ask: ‘how does diabetes affect a person’s life?’. As with any diagnosis, everyone responds to the condition slightly differently. But, yes, most people can live an entirely normal life whilst managing their diabetes.
For many people with diabetes, management can be simple. Making careful food choices and maintaining a consistent diet and exercise routine go a long way.
We recognise that a “normal life” may look different for everyone. That’s why our team of CareGivers work closely with all Clients to define a tailored care plan
What are the effects of diabetes?
The impact of diabetes on a person’s life can vary dramatically. With proper care and management, diabetes may have fairly minimal effects on your day-to-day life. However, a lack of appropriate care can result in serious health complications related to diabetes mellitus.
Common side effects of diabetes include:
- Foot ulcers
- Cardiovascular complications
- Kidney disease
- Impaired vision
- Gum disease and dental issues
- Stroke
- Nerve damage
- Fatigue
Our diabetes care plans are designed to help you manage the disease and prevent negative side effects. However, if you do face additional health complications, we can adjust your homecare service to meet your new requirements.
