What is respite care?
Respite care is temporary support that gives a family carer a break. It’s a chance to step back and rest, while someone else takes over the care of your loved one, just for a little while.
Across the UK, an estimated 6.5 million people are caring for family members or friends, with 1.4 million providing over 50 hours of care every week. Caring is a labour of love, but it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting.
At Right at Home, our respite care at home happens in the comfort of your own home. One of our trained and friendly care professionals will come in to provide the support your loved one needs – whether that’s help with personal care, getting around the house, medication, or simply some friendly company.
This short-term respite care can be planned in advance – for example, if you’re going on holiday – or arranged more quickly in unexpected situations, like after a hospital stay or if the usual carer is unwell. We also provide respite care for those with dementia or more complex needs, so whatever your circumstances, we’re here to help.
How much does respite care cost?
The price of our respite care will depend on the Client’s individual needs and the length of care provided. We always recommend one-hour minimum visits to be able to provide safe and effective care provision. Please contact us so we can provide you with an estimated cost of care.
What is the difference between respite homecare and residential respite care?
Respite care usually falls into two main types: respite care at home or in a residential setting.
With home-based respite care, a trained Carer visits in the comfort of the Client’s home.
Residential respite care involves a short stay in a care home or nursing facility. Choosing between the two depends on the individual’s needs and preferences.
What happens if you need more long-term support?
Sometimes, a person’s care needs can change. You may find that respite care is no longer enough if needs become more complex or if there are increasing concerns about safety and wellbeing.
If this happens, we are here to guide you through the options. Our team can help you review your situation and create a longer-term care plan that ensures your loved one continues to receive the high-quality, compassionate support they deserve.

How long can you have respite care for?
Respite care can be for a short period or a number of weeks.
We offer short-term and long-term homecare agreements, offering support for a regular Carer. You may require respite care to cover a Carer’s time off, holidays or day trips.
Our social care and support can be arranged as one-off or regular visits. Rather than holiday cover, you may require respite care for a day a week, on a regular basis. There’s no strict limit to how long you can have respite homecare for.
However long it lasts, we aim to make the temporary change in circumstances as easy for you as possible.
What happens if my condition changes?
We regularly review all Care & Support Plans to make sure they remain suitable. If your recovery progresses or your needs change, we’ll adjust the plan accordingly. Our aim is to provide the right level of support at every stage of your recovery.
Who qualifies for respite care?
Respite care is suitable for people of all ages who usually receive care or rely on friends and family every day. Whilst we often provide respite care for elderly people, our services are not exclusive to older people.
